During the Lenten season, staff and church leaders will share a daily devotional. Please join us on the journey.

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 28:19

Super Bowl

Steve Dorough – Sunday School Leader

What if someone gave you two tickets to the Super Bowl? What would you do? Simple. You would invite your spouse or “significant other” and the two of you would have a once in a lifetime experience.

But what if you were given one hundred tickets to the Super Bowl? That could pose a problem. Oh, You aren’t allowed to sell the tickets on one of the ticket websites. You have to give those tickets away…to family, friends, co-workers, even strangers. Imagine their joy at receiving a free ticket to such an amazing event. You can almost see it unfolding in your mind,

“Here Bob. I want you to have this free ticket to the Super Bowl.”

“Wow!” Bob says as you put the ticket into his hand. “This is amazing, what do I owe you?”

“Nothing.” You say. “I just wanted you to have it.”

“Are you serious?” Bob asks, the reality of what you’ve just given him begins to resonate in Bob’s mind.

“I am absolutely serious. You have been a wonderful friend to me. And I immediately thought of you when I received these tickets. I knew that you would want to go. And I wanted to make sure you got the opportunity. So…enjoy!” Bob’s eyes fill with tears as he reaches out and gives you a big hug. “I can’t begin to tell you how much this means to me,” he says.

Stop.

What if instead of Super Bowl tickets you were giving people the opportunity to go to heaven? Rather than giving something of earthly value that will only last a moment…why not give something of heavenly value that will last for eternity? Think of all the people…family, friends, co-workers, even strangers you have yet to meet…to whom you can give this “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

All you have to do is share your faith in Jesus Christ and invite them to follow Christ and join you in heaven. The Holy Spirit will take it from there. But you have to make the offer. As Christians we are charged with the responsibility…every day…to all with whom we come in contact…to make disciples. We are God’s representatives tasked with extending the invitation to others that we have already accepted ourselves.

And then one day in the future, you’ll stand in the heavenly kingdom and be amazed at all of the people you know who are standing there with you because of the free ticket you gave them!

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”  Matthew 28:19

Prayer: Dear Jesus – please give me an opportunity to share your amazing love with someone today.
